My name is Baroness Elizabeth Zemo, and I'm a fulfilled, autonomous woman, not a "girlfriend."

April, for decades feminists have warned us that the stubborn, unyielding patriarchalism of our culture will keep dragging women back toward the discredited roles of the past. Your essay confirms that sad fact once again. Since the dawn of the modern superheroic age over two generations ago, almost every heroic woman, in our reality or comics, gets stereotyped as virgin or whore, faithful sidekick to the male or warped demoness.

As you said, "all of the hard work I’ve done over the years, to try and establish myself as an independent person and an artist and writer in my own right, has been eclipsed by my newfound identity, as someone else’s appendage."

The way out, darling, is not to fight random eruptions of sociopathic evil but to reject the entire system. That, in the terms of the men who run the world and write the comics (or the women who have bought into that mindset), makes one a "villain."

I call it freedom. The freedom to ignore stereotyping, the freedom to put one's own desires and talents first, the freedom to be my own character without a thought for what some man may think (although I do have to keep an eye on my unalive grandfather).

April, dear, you may still think of me as evil, because of the residue of your upbringing, like mine, in a macho society, but in my heart I know you will join me eventually. Make it sooner rather than later, and leave the boyfriend behind.
